New Directions

A Family  Strengthening Program

        " A unique groundbreaking program"

New Directions is one of the few programs in the nation that
addresses domestic violence by juveniles against their parents or
caregivers.

There are many different issues which the parent must address:

*Parents may or may not call the police on their child

*Violence may have occurred, or it may be the threat of violence

*Other children in the family are victimized by the abuser

*Teachers are being exposed to threats of violence by these children

*The juvenile system is unable to address the juvenile and the family dynamics

"The issue must be addressed or the cycle will continue"

Domestic violence starts with the young learning how to be abusive, the juvenile justices system tries to intervene, but juvenile domestic violence abusers become adult abusers.

There are no programs for the teen and family that addresses this type of situation with the exception of New Directions. The program targets at-risk youth age 12-16
who are demonstrating violence tendencies toward their families.

Families who have experienced domestic violence in their households often leave an aftermath of potential violent children. When these children become teens, violence or the threat of violence by these teens begins to occur. The families which are involved in this program are not currently in domestic violence settings at home but the mother, father, step-parent, grandparent, foster parent, aunt or other caregiver has the responsibility of raising a teen who is beginning to exhibit violent behavior. New Directions is a program that is changing those patterns and behaviors.
